WhatsApp Cloud API

Meta-hosted, direct API access to WhatsApp Business — alternative to using a BSP.

Cloud API launched in 2022 as Meta's direct API offering, removing the need for BSPs (or for businesses to host their own WhatsApp instance, the older 'on-premise API'). It's cheaper per conversation, has no platform middleman, and uses the same conversation pricing as BSP-resold APIs.

The trade-off: you build your own integration (multi-agent inbox, broadcast tool, template manager, automation, CRM) or use open-source alternatives. For tech-capable teams, Cloud API saves significant cost over BSP plans at scale.

Meta's free conversation tier (1,000 service conversations/month) applies regardless of Cloud API or BSP route.

India context

Indian D2C brands sending 50K+ messages/month often migrate from BSP to Cloud API for cost savings — going from ~₹0.85 to ~₹0.55 per marketing conversation. The engineering effort pays back in 3-6 months at that volume.

Examples

  • A 100-person ecom team builds custom WhatsApp inbox on Cloud API + their own analytics.
  • A salon chain uses BSP for ease, never migrates to Cloud API.

FAQ

Is Cloud API really cheaper than BSPs?

Yes — direct Cloud API has no platform fee. BSPs add ₹2-15/month per number. At scale, savings are significant.

Can I migrate from BSP to Cloud API?

Yes — Embedded Signup or direct Cloud API onboarding. Migration is usually 1-2 weeks. Templates and historical data may not all transfer.

Does Cloud API support all WhatsApp features?

Yes — buttons, list messages, templates, location messages, document attachments, all supported. Same feature set as BSPs.
