Post-2020 reform, MSME is defined by both investment in plant/machinery AND annual turnover. Micro: ≤₹1Cr investment + ≤₹5Cr turnover. Small: ≤₹10Cr + ≤₹50Cr. Medium: ≤₹50Cr + ≤₹250Cr. Service businesses use the same thresholds.
Benefits of registration (now called Udyam): collateral-free loans up to ₹2Cr, 1% interest subvention, priority sector lending, faster GeM (govt e-Marketplace) onboarding, MSE Samadhaan portal for delayed-payment recovery, Vendor Bill of Sale protection, and various state-level subsidies.
Udyam registration is free, online, and based on PAN + Aadhaar. Most SMBs fall under MSME but never register; the actual business benefit comes from collateral-free loans and the 45-day delayed-payment law.
