MSME

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise — government classification with benefits for businesses below specific turnover thresholds.

Post-2020 reform, MSME is defined by both investment in plant/machinery AND annual turnover. Micro: ≤₹1Cr investment + ≤₹5Cr turnover. Small: ≤₹10Cr + ≤₹50Cr. Medium: ≤₹50Cr + ≤₹250Cr. Service businesses use the same thresholds.

Benefits of registration (now called Udyam): collateral-free loans up to ₹2Cr, 1% interest subvention, priority sector lending, faster GeM (govt e-Marketplace) onboarding, MSE Samadhaan portal for delayed-payment recovery, Vendor Bill of Sale protection, and various state-level subsidies.

Udyam registration is free, online, and based on PAN + Aadhaar. Most SMBs fall under MSME but never register; the actual business benefit comes from collateral-free loans and the 45-day delayed-payment law.

India context

The 'pay MSME within 45 days' law (Section 43B(h)) was strengthened in 2023 — non-payment to a registered MSME within 45 days disallows the buyer's expense deduction in income tax. This single change drove a massive 2024 spike in Udyam registrations.

Examples

  • A salon with ₹2Cr turnover, ₹50L equipment investment registers as Micro Udyam — gets ₹50L collateral-free loan eligibility.
  • A D2C brand at ₹15Cr turnover, ₹2Cr inventory investment registers as Small Udyam — gets priority lending.

FAQ

Is Udyam registration mandatory?

No, but without it you can't access MSME benefits. Many SMBs register only when needed (loan application, GeM onboarding, dispute resolution).

What's the 45-day rule?

Buyers must pay registered MSME suppliers within 45 days of invoice date. If they don't, the buyer's payment is disallowed as a tax deduction. Forces large companies to honor MSME payment terms.

Can I lose MSME status?

Yes — if you exceed thresholds, you re-register at the higher tier. Status is reviewed annually based on previous year's turnover and investment.
