IEC (Importer Exporter Code)

10-digit code from DGFT required for any import or export of goods/services from India.

IEC is mandatory for any cross-border trade — exports of goods, exports of services to foreign clients (in some cases), and imports. It's a one-time registration via the DGFT portal, takes 1-3 days, and lasts indefinitely (no renewal).

For Indian SMBs exporting to foreign customers (D2C international shipping, freelance services, SaaS to global buyers), IEC enables: foreign currency receipts via banks, GST refund on zero-rated supplies, MEIS/RoDTEP export incentives, and customs clearance.

Without IEC, banks won't credit foreign currency receipts to your account, and shipping aggregators (Shiprocket, DHL) won't process export shipments.

India context

Many Indian SaaS founders selling to global B2B buyers via Stripe or similar miss the IEC requirement until their bank flags an inbound foreign wire. Application is free and online; should be done before the first foreign sale.

Examples

  • A Bangalore D2C beauty brand exporting to UAE needs IEC to ship via DHL Express.
  • A freelance developer in Pune billing US clients via Wise needs IEC for the foreign currency credit.

FAQ

Is IEC required for service exports?

Yes for forex receipts via bank route. Some informal modes (PayPal, Wise) flag it less strictly, but the requirement legally applies.

Does IEC need renewal?

Updated annually via DGFT portal — a simple verification, no fee. Failure to update can suspend the IEC.

Can a sole proprietor get IEC?

Yes — sole proprietors, partnerships, LLPs, and companies all qualify. Documents: PAN, Aadhaar, bank cancelled cheque, address proof.
